Baptism is the outward expression of the inward decision you have made to follow Christ. It does not save you — but it is the first step of obedience for a new believer, and a beautiful public picture of the gospel.
When we are baptized by immersion, we picture the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and we announce to the world that our old life is behind us and we are walking in newness of life in Him.
